

Black Matpe is another trade name for Black Gram (Vigna mungo) and it is also known as Urad Dal in India. It’s a type of pulse/bean widely grown in Myanmar, India, and other Asian countries. Black Matpe is originated in India where it has been in cultivation from ancient times and is one of the most highly prized pulses of India.
India is the largest producer and also largest importer of Black Matpe. Myanmar is one of the largest exporters of Black Matpe to India and commonly used in Indian cuisine (idli, dosa, papad, dal, etc.).
In Myanmar, Black Matpe is gown during winter seasons (starting October), and it is harvested from March to April. The mainly production areas are Kachin, Kayar, Sagaing, Tananthayi, Begu, Mandalay, Mon, Shan, and Irrawaddy. Myanmar annually produces around 500,000 tons.
