Peanuts, Ground Nut

Description

Peanut is commonly called as Groundnut, Monkey-nut, or Earth-nut. Its botanical name is Arachis hypogaea L., and it belongs to the family Leguminosae. Peanuts is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The major groundnut-producing areas include India, China, West Africa, Congo, Nigeria, and the southeastern part of the United States. Peanuts cultivation was not common in Myanmar. Some records mention that Peanut was first introduced in Magway in 1885, although it is also said that cultivation had already begun earlier in Shan State.
Rainy season Peanuts (upright type) is cultivated during June and July, while rainy season Peanuts (spreading type) is cultivated during May and October. Winter Peanuts (upright type) is cultivated in September and October.
In Myanmar, Peanuts is cultivated mainly in Magway, Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, Ayeyarwady, Shan, Kayin, and Mon.
